The Gemmological Institute of America (GIA) grades yellow diamonds on a spectrum from 'Faint' to 'Fancy vivid', with the latter being the most vibrant and rare, and therefore, typically the most valuable. Before that, these golden gems were so rare that even Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, the legendary gem merchant who discovered the Hope Diamond, found them remarkable enough to record. He was captivated by a stunning 137.27-carat yellow diamond, which he famously referred to by several names: the 'Florentine'. the 'Austrian Yellow', and the 'Grand Duke of Tuscany'.
